Joel L. Mayerson to Chair AAOS Board of Councilors

Ohio orthopedic surgeon Joel L. Mayerson, M.D., has become chair of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ (AAOS) Board of Councilors.

Recognized as an inventor, researcher and leader in orthopedic oncology, he is professor of orthopedic surgery at The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Medicine in Columbus. Since 2009, he has held leadership positions at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC – James), where he is currently associate chief medical officer, medical director of surgical services and medical director of sarcoma services.
 
Mayerson’s research focuses on post-surgical patient outcomes and innovative surgical techniques that improve care. Among his scientific contributions that have changed care is a percutaneous drug regimen treatment for aneurysmal bone cysts. He has authored more than 140 journal articles and book chapters and conducted more than 125 presentations worldwide.
 
An active AAOS volunteer leader for two decades, Mayerson has helped shape the orthopedic profession. He was a member of the Board of Specialty Societies, Research and Quality Council, Musculoskeletal Oncology Content Committee, and Committee on Healthcare Safety, in addition to other roles.
 
His drive for excellence and growth in the specialty is also reflected in his roles with other organizations. Mayerson is past president of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) and helped lead the transition for MSTS to oversee the accreditation and match process for orthopedic oncology fellowships in North America. His leadership as president of the Ohio Orthopaedic Society (2021-2022) resulted in more than 40% membership growth during his term. In 2020, he was inducted into the Mazzaferri-Ellison Society of Master Clinicians, a peer-nominated honor society at OSU recognizing “master clinicians who excel in clinical practice, clinical teaching, mentoring, professionalism, and service.” He is also among the top 10% of orthopedic surgeons elected to membership in the American Orthopaedic Association.
 
Mayerson earned his undergraduate degree from The University of Toledo and medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. He completed surgical residency at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation and fellowship in adult and pediatric orthopedic oncology at the University of Washington in Seattle.
